About this exhibition:

This exposition is an initiative from the school for art and music, Mezzos vzw in a joint effort with KEG (Kunst Experimenten Gent) and is already 10 years old under the umbrella: “KEG POPUP ART FESTIVAL”.

The goal is to expose submerging talent to the public. Mezzos creates a step up for emerging talent, talent that is present but not visible to a broader public.

Mezzos is empowering emerging artists through the KEG POPUP Art Festival by giving them a unique underground stage to shine. By curating dynamic exhibitions and live performances, Mezzos helps artists connect directly with new audiences. The POPUP KEG festival creates space for experimentation, collaboration, and real-time creation. Through this initiative, Mezzos is actively submerging fresh talent into Ghent’s vibrant cultural scene.

Sergei Andreev is a contemporary Russian painter whose work bridges tradition and technology.
Born from the rich lineage of Russian fine art, he blends classical techniques with bold modern expression. His canvases are known for dramatic color, emotional depth, and cinematic composition.
In recent years, Andreev has emerged as a leading voice in AI-assisted creativity. He uses machine learning to generate visual concepts that expand the boundaries of imagination. Each piece combines human intuition with algorithmic innovation. Collectors value his work for its fusion of heritage and futurism. Andreev’s art has been featured in galleries, digital showcases, and international exhibitions. He continues to explore the evolving relationship between the artist and the machine. Sergei Andreev stands at the forefront of a new era of hybrid artistry (text from Jaco aka Freddy Jacobs , mezzos institute for music and arts)

BIO

Sergei Andreev was born on January 16, 1970, in Orenburg, the capital of the province of the same name on the Ural River, on the border between Europe and Asia.

In 1985, he moved to secondary school. It was during his school years that he discovered his talent for painting, but despite this, he chose to pursue an education in sports. As a result, he became the Orenburg cross-country skiing champion.

Because his (creative) blood ran where it couldn’t be stopped, he designed posters for various cultural events on a voluntary basis as an illustrator during his physical education studies.

In 1988, he successfully completed his training as a sports teacher. Subsequently, he was offered the opportunity to serve his country in the army, but after barely 6 months, he was discharged from the army for medical reasons.

In the 1990s, he taught physical education to mentally handicapped children. In 1994, he began painting again, and in 1997, as a young artist, he participated in a group exhibition themed ‘Erotic Christian Surrealism’. Russian art critics at the time described his painting style as ‘new primitive kitsch’.

In 1999, an exhibition followed at the Historical Museum in his birthplace, Orenburg. The exhibition was shut down by the police due to its controversial themes regarding politics and eroticism. In the same year, another solo exhibition followed in the Orenburg town hall, and here too the paintings were censored: certain parts were concealed from the public.

Despite everything, Sergei Andreev obtained his membership card from the Russian Painters’ Association, an indispensable document for working as a recognized artist.

In 2000, he came to Belgium, and 2005 was his graduation year in the ‘Design and Illustrative Drawing’ program at CVO Ghent. He trained in 2007 at the ‘Experimental Painting’ department of the Ghent Academy of Fine Arts. Finally, in 2014, he obtained his professional diploma as a ‘Painting Restorer’ at the Syntra-West campus in Bruges.
